Building Leadership

Mr. Raymond Porten

Welcome to Indian Hill Elementary! Your child’s academic and social-emotional development during their years here is vital to their success. Together, we lay the foundation of each child’s academic and social/emotional presence in the world. The experiences that your child will have here at Indian Hill will set their path for success in school and in life. Our staff pledges to make "Academic Excellence and Social-Emotional Confidence" the centerpiece of every decision that is made toward a successful education.

While I am excited to be in my 8th year as Principal at Indian Hill, I come into this year with the same excitement and motivation I brought here in my first year as Principal. I know the value of a good education for children and while my experiences have reinforced this, I have the fortune of being married to my best friend, and together, we are the proud parents of two wonderful boys who are allowing me to see all perspectives of a child’s education. I keep my experiences as a parent of elementary-aged students in mind while making any decisions for your children and always ask myself, “Would I want this for my children?”.

Your partnership with us is greatly valued! This year we are going to encourage everyone “BE IH” where they can:

  • Be Here
  • Be You
  • Belong!

We know that a great education is the gatekeeper of future success and a great home-to-school connection is the foundation! As parents, there are many ways you can be involved in the life of this school and the most important is setting a tone for the importance of why they are at school. Please take the time each day to read, play a game and talk about their experiences. These activities will help develop both academic and social skills that are vital to your child’s success.

Our goal in working with you is to ensure that we educate the Whole Child! Please reach out to me or your child’s teacher if there is any way we can support you in this important year!

Mrs. Kathleen Carden

I am excited to begin my second year alongside Mr. Porten and the incredible staff of Indian Hill Elementary as we work to inspire and empower your children to become lifelong learners. Your children are precious gifts, and we are grateful to you for sharing them with us. We recognize you as your child’s first and primary teacher, and we are excited to partner with you on this leg of their educational journey. I will strive each and every day to ensure that your child’s minds and hearts are ready for wherever their future leads them. It is my hope that along with you, we empower your children to be productive citizens ready to make a difference in the world around them.

Our theme for the 2023-2024 school year is BE IH, or Be Indian Hill. Through this theme, we will remind students to Be Here. Be You. Belong. Every child has a home here at Indian Hill and we want to help each child embrace his/her unique qualities while appreciating those of others.

I have spent the better part of my life in education, first as a teacher in public school and then as a building administrator in private school. Additionally, my experience as a mother of six children drives my decision-making and desire for the best educational experience for your children. My own children have provided me with firsthand experience of a variety of learning needs including anxiety, ADHD, gifted and talented learning, and a cognitive disability. I look forward to supporting teachers and families of ALL learners and believe that ALL children can and will learn and succeed here at Indian Hill.

If I have not already met you, I look forward to doing so very soon. I have been extremely impressed with the dedication to excellence that I have seen in the Round Lake Area School District, particularly the Indian Hill staff. I was drawn to this school because of the dedication to excellence that each staff member brings.  I look forward to supporting the teachers, students, and families of Indian Hill. If I can be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to reach out.
